Video Marketing for SEO: How to Get More From Your Videos

Video marketing can help your business reach new audiences, share expertise, and strengthen your SEO strategy. Learn how to create and optimize videos that get found and deliver lasting value across your marketing channels.

Video marketing gives people another way to discover your business, learn about your products or services, and engage with your content. Just like written information, videos need to be created with your audience in mind and optimized so people can actually find them. The good news is that you don’t need a professional production studio or a massive budget to get started. There are plenty of accessible ways to incorporate video into your SEO content strategy.

What Is Video Marketing in SEO?

Video marketing is the practice of creating, publishing, and optimizing video content to increase your visibility in organic search results, reach relevant audiences, and support your larger marketing goals.

For some businesses, video marketing is a major undertaking, complete with professional production teams, elaborate campaigns, active YouTube channels, and a steady stream of content for social media. But that isn’t the only way to approach it. Video marketing can be as simple and relatively lo-fi. The important thing is to think strategically about what your videos are accomplishing and where people will find them.

Is Video Content Good for SEO?

Yes, of course! Video content gives your business more opportunities to appear in search results, demonstrate expertise, and connect with potential customers. But we don’t want to give the impression that video content is an SEO trick (sorry, there aren’t really any legit SEO tricks despite all the mysticism in our field). Simply adding videos to your website won’t magically improve your rankings, but creating relevant, useful video content can strengthen your overall SEO efforts.

Video Content Creates More Opportunities for Organic Search Visibility

Google recognizes that certain searches benefit from video results. Think about the kinds of questions people turn to search engines to answer. Sometimes a written explanation is exactly what they need, but other times, seeing something in action is far more helpful. Depending on the query, videos can appear alongside traditional webpages in Google’s main search results, as well as in dedicated video search features.

Publishing videos on YouTube also gives your business access to another search platform where people are actively looking for information. Someone who might never discover your website through a traditional search result could encounter your brand through a relevant tutorial, product demonstration, or educational video.

Videos Can Improve the User Experience and Demonstrate Expertise

When done well, video content can help demonstrate E-E-A-T, Google’s framework for assessing Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness.

The format gives people another way to consume information, which can be particularly valuable when something is difficult to communicate through text alone. A product demonstration can show customers exactly how something works, while a video explaining a service can give prospective clients a better understanding of what to expect. And sometimes, people would simply rather watch a video than read through several paragraphs of text.

According to research conducted by an independent market research firm and published in Idomoo’s 2026 State of Video Technology report, 80% of consumers surveyed said they wanted more video content from brands. Research also suggests that video can help people retain information. A 2026 study published in Frontiers in Psychology found that university students who learned about a topic through an animated video performed better on comprehension tests, both immediately and one week later, than students who learned from equivalent written material.

In a September 2026 Digiday report, Meltwater data showed that YouTube was the most-cited platform across eight AI products in August, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity. This is an interesting development for businesses creating tutorials, demonstrations, and educational videos. Someone asking an AI tool how to use a product or solve a problem might be directed to a relevant YouTube video, even if they didn’t specifically ask for video content.

It’s worth noting that a citation doesn’t necessarily mean an AI system used the video to generate its answer. Sometimes, it’s simply recommending the video as an additional resource.

An Established Video Library Can Benefit Your Future Advertising Efforts

An organic video strategy can create a library of marketing assets that makes future campaigns easier to build and test.

We’ve seen this firsthand with one of our clients. When we began managing their Google Ads campaigns, they already had a well-established YouTube channel with an extensive library of videos performing well organically. Instead of trying to make the most of one or two videos, which is the circumstance many businesses find themselves in, we had plenty of strong options to choose from, allowing us to build out the campaigns and test different creative assets. The campaigns generated 45 bookings in their first week of delivery, exceeding the client’s expectations.

Of course, we can’t attribute that success to video content alone. The client’s existing SEO foundation, strong website, established brand recognition, and campaign management all contributed to a favorable starting point. But having that video library ready to go gave us more flexibility from the get-go.

Even if paid advertising isn’t part of your current marketing strategy, building a library of useful video content now can open up opportunities down the road.

How to Create Video Content That Supports SEO

Creating video content for SEO follows many of the same principles as written content. Start with what your audience is searching for, then create a video that answers their questions clearly and effectively.

Start With Keyword Research and Search Intent

Use SE Ranking, Google Search Console, and YouTube search suggestions to find relevant topics. Review videos already ranking for your target keywords to see what viewers expect and where you can offer something more useful.

Focus on Content Quality Over Production Costs

You don’t need expensive equipment. Prioritize clear audio, helpful information, and a knowledgeable presenter. Get to the point quickly, and let the topic determine the video’s length. AI can help with scripting, editing, and captions, but always review its output for accuracy and quality.

How to Optimize Your Videos for SEO

Optimization is necessary to make sure LLMs and Google can find and understand your videos.

Optimize for YouTube Search and Discovery

YouTube considers relevance, engagement, and quality when ranking videos in search results. Its recommendation system also considers viewer preferences and satisfaction.

To improve your visibility:

  • Include relevant keywords naturally in video titles and descriptions.
  • Create compelling, accurate thumbnails that encourage clicks.
  • Add captions and timestamps to make videos more accessible and easier to navigate.
  • Get to the point quickly and keep viewers engaged.
  • Use playlists and end screens to direct viewers to related videos.
  • Monitor click-through rates, watch time, and audience retention to see what’s working and where improvements are needed.

Videos embedded on your website need supporting information and proper technical optimization to help Google discover and understand them.

  • Embed videos on relevant pages with descriptive headings and supporting written content.
  • Include accurate captions or transcripts when appropriate.
  • Use dedicated video watch pages when watching the video is the page’s primary purpose.
  • Implement VideoObject schema markup to communicate information such as the video’s title, thumbnail, description, and upload date.
  • Check Google Search Console for video indexing issues.
