Every few years, someone declares that SEO is dead. Social media was going to kill it. Voice search was going to kill it. Zero-click search was going to kill it. Now AI is supposedly going to finish the job.
We don’t buy it.
Search is changing dramatically, but the need for search engines and AI systems to find, access, understand, and trust your content hasn’t gone away. If anything, it has become more important.

You can have the best content in your industry, experienced subject-matter experts, strong brand authority, original research, and a beautiful website. But if Google struggles to crawl it, ChatGPT can’t access it, your JavaScript hides important content, your canonical tags point in the wrong direction, or your site architecture makes your best pages difficult to discover, none of that content can perform as well as it should.
Before you can win the answer, you have to be eligible to be found.
And that starts with technical SEO.
Technical SEO Has Always Been the Infrastructure
Technical SEO isn’t the glamorous part of search marketing. Nobody gets particularly excited about status codes, canonical tags, rendering, server logs, or XML sitemaps.
But the unglamorous work is often what makes everything else possible.
We think of technical SEO as the infrastructure underneath your organic strategy. Content is what you build. Authority is what you earn. Technical SEO makes sure the roads actually lead somewhere.
When that infrastructure is healthy, search engines can efficiently discover your content, understand how pages relate to one another, determine which URLs belong in the index, and deliver users to a fast, functional experience.
When it isn’t, you start leaking opportunity.
Sometimes that leak is obvious: a page gets accidentally marked noindex, a migration creates thousands of broken URLs, or a developer unintentionally blocks an important section of the site.
Other times, the problems are quieter. Important content sits six clicks deep. Multiple versions of the same page compete with one another. JavaScript makes critical information harder to access. Internal links give prominence to pages that have little strategic value.
Those problems may never produce one dramatic red flag. They simply make it harder for your content to perform, which is exactly why technical SEO deserves even more attention as search becomes increasingly AI-driven.
AI Search Did Not Make SEO Irrelevant
There’s a growing industry around new acronyms: AEO, GEO, LLM SEO, AI Search Optimization, and whatever term comes next.
We’ve written more extensively about the differences between SEO and GEO, and some of these terms are useful for describing changes in how people discover information. What we’re skeptical of is the idea that everything we know about search suddenly stopped mattering.
It didn’t.
Google has made it clear that its existing SEO fundamentals still apply to experiences such as AI Overviews and AI Mode. There isn’t a magic “AI schema,” a special piece of markup that guarantees a citation, or a secret GEO switch you can flip.
The fundamental question is still:
Can the system find, understand, and confidently use your content?
That’s an SEO question.
AI search introduces new surfaces and user behaviors, but beneath those experiences lie many of the same technical realities that websites have dealt with for years. Crawlers need access. Pages need to load. Content needs to be understandable. Signals need to be consistent. Important pages need to be discoverable.
If your website fails those tests, adding “AI optimization” to your marketing plan won’t fix the underlying problem.
AI Search Raises the Technical Stakes
Traditional SEO was already complicated because you were optimizing for search engines to crawl, render, and index your website. Now the ecosystem is expanding.
Google Search isn’t the only system discovering information from the open web. ChatGPT search, Bing, Copilot, emerging AI assistants, and other discovery platforms increasingly depend on crawling, search indexes, web content, or some combination of those systems.

For years, robots.txt was often treated like a technical housekeeping file. We don’t think that mindset works anymore.
The question of which crawlers can access your content increasingly touches SEO, AI visibility, intellectual property, content strategy, legal policy, and broader business strategy.
That means someone should actually understand what is in the file.
Who are you blocking? Who are you allowing? Why? Are those decisions intentional? And are your robots.txt directives being contradicted by settings somewhere else in your technology stack?
The worst outcome isn’t blocking a crawler. Businesses may have perfectly valid reasons for doing that.
The bigger problem is blocking something accidentally and never realizing you’ve done it.
Technical SEO Is No Longer Just About Getting Indexed
We also think the industry’s definition of technical SEO needs to evolve.
Getting indexed is the minimum. Modern technical SEO is about creating a site that machines can efficiently navigate and interpret.
That means thinking about crawlability, indexability, rendering, site architecture, internal linking, canonicalization, structured data, page performance, server responses, JavaScript, sitemaps, redirects, bot accessibility, mobile experience, and content discoverability.
Individually, none of those ideas is revolutionary. The opportunity comes from understanding how they work together and which problems actually matter to the business.
Crawlability Still Comes First
This sounds obvious, but we continue to see businesses invest heavily in content that search engines struggle to discover.
If a page isn’t accessible, everything that comes after it becomes irrelevant. That’s why rastreabilidad remains one of the first things we evaluate when diagnosing technical SEO problems.
A technical SEO strategy should answer basic questions. Can search engines reach your important pages? Are those pages allowed to be indexed? Are important sections accidentally blocked? Are valuable pages only reachable through JavaScript interactions? Do you have orphan pages with no meaningful internal links?
You also need to consider where crawlers are spending their time. If they’re constantly hitting parameter URLs, filters, internal search results, and duplicate pages while barely touching your strategically important content, that deserves attention.
These aren’t just technical questions.
They’re visibility questions.
Site Architecture Is an SEO Strategy
One of the most common mistakes we see is treating website architecture as purely a design or UX decision.
Navigation communicates importance. Internal links communicate relationships. Hierarchy helps search systems understand which pages matter and how different topics connect.
If you publish fifty excellent articles around a subject but barely connect them, you’re making search engines do unnecessary work. The same problem occurs when one of your most valuable service pages is buried four or five clicks deep while relatively unimportant pages receive dozens of prominent internal links.
Internal linking helps SEO for more reasons than simply distributing “link equity.” It helps search systems discover content, understand relationships between pages, and identify which areas of your site you consider important.
As search becomes increasingly entity-driven and AI-assisted, clear relationships between topics, services, experts, locations, products, and supporting content become even more valuable.
Page Speed Matters, but Stop Chasing Perfect Scores
We like fast websites. Users like fast websites. Search engines want users to have a good experience.
But technical SEO sometimes turns page speed into a game where teams spend enormous amounts of time chasing a perfect score instead of fixing the issues that actually affect users or organic performance.
Core Web Vitals provide useful metrics. Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) measures loading performance, Interaction to Next Paint (INP) measures responsiveness, and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) measures visual stability.
Those metrics matter, but the objective isn’t to brag about a perfect Lighthouse score. The objective is to create a fast, stable, responsive experience.
If improving a score from 96 to 100 consumes development resources that could instead be used to resolve serious crawl, indexing, conversion, or usability problems, it probably isn’t the best business decision.
Technical SEO requires prioritization, not perfectionism.
If you’re not sure where your site stands, you can also test your page speed before deciding where development resources should be focused.
JavaScript Is Still Creating SEO Problems
Modern websites are incredibly capable. They’re also increasingly complicated.
JavaScript frameworks allow businesses to create sophisticated digital experiences, but they can introduce significant search issues when SEO isn’t considered during development.
Yes, Google can render JavaScript. That doesn’t mean you should make Google work harder than necessary, and it certainly doesn’t mean every crawler or AI system will handle your JavaScript exactly the way Googlebot does.
We want to know whether important content is present in the initial HTML, whether crawlers can discover links without user interaction, whether rendering significantly changes the page, and whether critical elements disappear when scripts fail.
Whenever practical, make your important information easy for machines to access.
That isn’t old-school SEO. It’s good web architecture.
Duplicate Content Isn’t the Villain People Think It Is
Older SEO advice often treated duplicate content like a dangerous penalty waiting to happen. That’s usually an oversimplification.
Duplicate and near-duplicate URLs are normal. E-commerce filters create them. Tracking parameters create them. CMS platforms create them. Syndicated content can create them.
The issue is usually ambiguity, not punishment.
Which URL should be indexed? Which page should receive internal links? Which version should consolidate ranking signals? Which URLs should search engines spend their resources crawling?
Technical SEO is about reducing that ambiguity.
Use canonical tags intelligently. Redirect URLs that should no longer exist. Keep internal links consistent. Maintain a clean XML sitemap. And don’t create ten versions of a URL unless you actually need ten versions.
Structured Data Helps, but It Isn’t an AI Cheat Code
Structured data is useful, and we recommend it when it accurately represents the content and entities on a page.
It can help search engines understand whether they’re looking at a product, article, organization, event, job posting, local business, or another supported content type.
But we need to stop pretending schema markup is a magic ranking button.
We also shouldn’t position it as some secret method for getting into AI-generated answers. Google has explicitly stated that no special schema is required for AI Overviews or AI Mode.
Use structured data because it helps machines understand your content.
Don’t use it because somebody promised you “AI rankings” if you paste enough JSON-LD into your website.
XML Sitemaps Are Helpful. They Aren’t a Substitute for Architecture.
Another common misconception is that submitting an XML sitemap solves discovery problems.
It doesn’t.
An XML sitemap is a useful signal. It can tell search engines which canonical URLs you care about and help them discover new or updated pages.
But if your important pages aren’t internally linked, your architecture is confusing, and your website is filled with low-value URLs, a sitemap won’t magically solve the problem.
Your XML sitemap should support your website architecture.
It shouldn’t compensate for a bad one.
Stop Treating Technical SEO Audits Like Checklists
This may be our strongest opinion about technical SEO.
A technical audit shouldn’t just be a 200-item spreadsheet.
Anyone with a crawling tool can export a list of issues. That doesn’t make it a strategy.
A crawler might tell you that you have 486 missing meta descriptions, 173 redirecting internal links, 27 duplicate title tags, and several hundred images that are larger than recommended.
Some of those issues may matter. Others may have virtually no impact on organic performance.
The real work is determining:
What is actually preventing this website from performing better?
That requires context.
How large is the website? What platform is it built on? What changed recently? Where is organic traffic declining? Which sections generate revenue? How is Google actually crawling the site? What is and isn’t getting indexed? What happened during the last migration or redesign?
A strong technical SEO audit connects technical issues to business impact and prioritizes accordingly.
A good technical SEO isn’t simply an issue collector.
They’re problem solvers.

Server Logs Are Becoming More Valuable
One of the reasons we like server log analysis is that it answers a question many SEO tools can’t:
What are crawlers actually doing on your website?
A crawling tool can tell you what it found. A server log can tell you what Googlebot, Bingbot, AI crawlers, and other bots actually requested.
That can uncover important pages that aren’t being crawled, low-value URLs consuming crawl budget, unexpected bot behavior, recurring errors, redirect patterns, and crawler access problems.
As AI search creates more crawler types and discovery systems, log analysis becomes even more useful.
Instead of assuming machines can access your site, you can look at the evidence.
Technical SEO and Content SEO Shouldn’t Live in Separate Worlds
One of the industry’s biggest mistakes has been separating “technical SEO” and “content SEO” into completely independent disciplines.
They aren’t.
A strong technical strategy should support great content, and a great content strategy should influence technical architecture.
If you want to become authoritative around a subject, your website architecture should reinforce that expertise. Your internal linking should reinforce it. Your categories, supporting content, structured data, and crawl paths should all help make those relationships easier to understand.
That’s also why we think about SEO as a broader search strategy rather than a collection of isolated ranking tactics. Technical health, content, authority, user experience, and increasingly AI visibility all influence how a brand gets discovered.
Search engines don’t experience your website the way your marketing department does.
They see URLs, links, content, entities, redirects, markup, architecture, and signals.
Your job is to make those signals coherent.
AI Search Makes Clarity More Valuable
We believe one of the biggest themes of the next era of SEO will be clarity.
Clear content. Clear authorship. Clear entities. Clear relationships. Clear architecture. Clear internal linking. Clear technical signals. Clear canonical URLs. Clear crawler access.
When machines are being asked to interpret enormous amounts of information and determine which sources they can confidently use, ambiguity isn’t your friend.
That doesn’t mean simplifying everything on your website. It means making the website easier to interpret.
Your audience should know who you are and what you do. Search engines should understand it too. AI systems should be able to determine what your company does, which topics you have expertise in, and how your content connects.
Technical SEO is a major part of creating that clarity.
What Should Businesses Be Doing Right Now?
Don’t panic and rebuild your entire SEO strategy because someone renamed optimization “GEO.”
Start with the fundamentals.
Make sure your website is technically healthy and that your important content is accessible. Review which crawlers you allow. Clean up your site architecture and improve internal linking. Resolve indexing and canonicalization problems. Understand how JavaScript affects your content.
Use structured data where it adds genuine meaning. Monitor Core Web Vitals without obsessing over perfect scores. Keep your sitemaps accurate. Monitor Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. For larger or more complex sites, start looking at server logs and crawler behavior.
Then build the content, expertise, and authority that make your website worth surfacing in the first place.
That’s where traditional SEO and Visibilidad de la IA increasingly meet. The goal isn’t to abandon what works. It’s to make sure your organic strategy accounts for the growing number of places where people search, research, and make decisions.
That isn’t ignoring AI search.
That’s preparing for it properly.
The Future of Search Still Needs a Technical Foundation
We don’t know exactly what the search results page will look like five years from now. Frankly, nobody does.
Users may click fewer traditional blue links. AI assistants may become more prominent. Search interfaces will likely become increasingly conversational, and entirely new discovery platforms will emerge.
But there is one thing we’re comfortable betting on:
Machines will still need to find, access, interpret, and evaluate information.
That’s why we don’t see technical SEO becoming less relevant in an AI-driven search environment. We see the opposite.
The number of systems trying to understand your website is increasing. The complexity of websites is increasing. The number of places where your brand can be discovered is increasing.
The technical foundation underneath all of it matters.
So when someone tells you SEO is dead because AI changed the search results, we’d ask a different question:
If AI systems can’t reliably access and understand your website, how exactly are they supposed to recommend you?
Technical SEO isn’t dead.
AI just gave us more reasons to get it right.
